Derek has been involved in the construction industry since 1988 including eleven years in Hong Kong and seven years in the UK and Middle East. He is currently the director-in-charge of AECOM’s Building Structures and Facades Group in Queensland. He has been involved in a wide range of high-rise construction projects with capital values up to $1000 million.

Derek has a proven track record of innovation and delivery of major developments. He has developed designs that maximize flexibility and buildability through elimination of transfer structures, innovatively incorporating new technologies, minimizing shear wall requirements for lateral stability and providing efficient repeatable floor plates.

His experience has involved both steel and concrete-framed high-rise buildings, precast and pre-stressed construction techniques, demolition, refurbishment projects, top-down construction, railway station design, deep basements, large-scale site formations and highway construction. He has carried out numerous complex refurbishments of existing buildings. Derek was the design engineer for Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen, PRC which was the eight tallest building in the world at completion of construction.
